Veteran Indian actor Nana Patekar, renowned for his intense performances and complex character portrayals, passed away at the age of 75 in Goa on October 8, 2026. With a career spanning nearly five decades, Patekar redefined the conventional image of a Bollywood hero, leaving behind a legacy that has influenced generations of actors in both Hindi and Marathi cinema.
Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra in 1951, he embarked on his film journey with the 1978 Hindi film “Gaman.” His breakthrough came with “Aaj Ki Awaz” in 1984, and he further established his reputation through his role in “Ankush” in 1986. Patekar’s performance in Mira Nair’s “Salaam Bombay!” earned him widespread acclaim, and his role in “Parinda” won him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.
Transitioning from supporting roles to leading performances, Patekar gained prominence in films such as “Tiranga” and “Krantiveer,” with the latter earning him the National Film Award for Best Actor. His directorial debut, “Prahaar” in 1991, showcased his storytelling abilities and gained a dedicated following over time.
Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Patekar’s versatility shone as he navigated between lead and supporting roles in various genres, including serious dramas, action films, and comedies. Notably, his comedic turn as Uday Shetty in the 2007 film “Welcome” highlighted his exceptional comic timing. His repertoire also included notable works such as “Bluffmaster!,” “Phir Hera Pheri,” “Hattrick,” “Ab Tak Chhappan,” “Rajneeti,” and the Marathi film “Natsamrat.”
Patekar’s career was not without controversy. In 2018, actress Tanushree Dutta renewed allegations of sexual harassment against him during the filming of “Horn ‘Ok’ Pleassss.” Patekar denied the allegations, and the Mumbai police filed a closure report citing insufficient evidence. This controversy became a significant part of India’s #MeToo movement discourse.
Despite the debates surrounding his personal and professional life, Nana Patekar remained a celebrated figure for his unique acting style and dedication to diverse roles. His contributions to Indian cinema challenged conventional Bollywood stardom, emphasizing character depth, emotional authenticity, and intensity. Patekar’s enduring influence continues to resonate, securing his place among India’s most distinctive and respected actors.
