India and Switzerland have signed five agreements to bolster cooperation in areas such as trade, technology, and mobility. The pacts were finalized on Monday following discussions between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Swiss President Guy Parmelin. These agreements aim to enhance collaboration in sectors including migration, transportation, research, and innovation.
The agreements include a migration and mobility partnership designed to address irregular migration and human trafficking, featuring provisions for multiple-entry visas of up to five years and renewable permits for students. Additionally, a separate agreement facilitates the exchange of young professionals, allowing up to 300 individuals from each country to gain temporary employment and experience in professional and language skills annually.
In terms of economic collaboration, both countries have agreed to improve market access to support Indian exports of agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, textiles, and engineering goods. Meanwhile, Switzerland is encouraging Swiss investments in India’s biotechnology, life sciences, banking, insurance, food processing, and sustainability sectors.
India and Switzerland are also exploring increased cooperation in defense, nuclear energy, and military exchanges. Plans are underway to initiate joint research projects in areas such as health, clean energy, and space. The agreements include commitments to collaborate on transportation technologies, sustainable infrastructure, electric vehicles, and mobility systems.
The discussions coincided with the first anniversary of the India-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement, which is designed to boost investment, trade, and employment between India and the EFTA countries. During the talks, both nations also addressed global and regional issues, including the conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, advocating for dialogue and diplomatic efforts to maintain peace and stability.
