Thailand Revokes 60-Day Visa-Free Access for Indian Visitors

Thailand is set to implement stricter visa protocols, discontinuing the temporary 60-day visa-free entry policy that had been extended to travelers from several nations, including India. This shift signifies a return to more stringent entry requirements, potentially influencing the travel plans of Indian tourists looking to visit one of Asia’s top holiday spots. Under the new rules ratified by Thai authorities, Indian passport holders will need to opt for either a Visa on Arrival (VoA) upon arrival in Thailand or apply for an e-Visa prior to their departure.

The Visa on Arrival will permit Indian travelers to stay in Thailand for a maximum of 15 days per visit, a significant reduction from the previous 60-day period. For those looking to bypass potential delays at the airport, the e-Visa can be applied for online through Thailand’s official system before setting off. Industry experts anticipate that the changes might deter spontaneous travel and last-minute holiday bookings due to the added paperwork, application process, and associated visa fees. Nevertheless, Thailand is likely to maintain its status as a preferred destination for Indian tourists due to its affordability, excellent flight connections, diverse attractions, and renowned hospitality.

The new regulations are expected to have a more pronounced impact on travelers planning long stays, digital nomads, and those looking for extended multi-city vacations. As a result, some individuals seeking longer, more flexible stays might explore other Southeast Asian destinations with more lenient entry requirements. According to Thai officials, these updated rules will be enacted 15 days following their publication in the Royal Gazette. Travelers entering Thailand before this implementation date will still be subject to the previous guidelines and can remain until their entry-granted validity expires.

The expansion of visa-free access initially began in 2024 as part of Thailand’s efforts to rejuvenate its tourism sector and foster economic growth in the aftermath of the pandemic. This policy had successfully increased visitor numbers, reinforcing Thailand’s appeal for leisure travel, family vacations, and special events. However, officials have pointed out that tightening the entry regulations is necessary due to concerns regarding visa overstays, unauthorized business activities, and the necessity for enhanced immigration monitoring. The objective of the new framework is to balance tourism growth with effective border management and regulatory oversight.

Travelers planning to visit Thailand are advised to familiarize themselves with the latest visa requirements and entry guidelines to ensure a seamless travel experience. This preparation is essential for avoiding any potential inconveniences or disruptions in their travel plans, particularly with the forthcoming changes in visa regulations.
