Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a series of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) rallies across the state from October 13 to October 31, aimed at opposing the Congress party’s alleged attempts to undermine democratic institutions. The rallies, planned to be held at district headquarters, are intended to express support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and bolster public confidence in constitutional institutions, according to Sarma.
During a press briefing in Guwahati, Sarma accused Congress and other opposition parties of challenging key institutions such as the Election Commission and the Supreme Court for political gain. He criticized Congress’s stance on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, arguing that the revision is necessary to address concerns over voter lists and illegal immigration in Assam.
Sarma also targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, alleging that Gandhi applies different standards to election results depending on the winning party. He further criticized Gandhi’s actions regarding the Supreme Court, emphasizing that constitutional institutions should remain free from political pressure.
The BJP stated that the rallies will focus on supporting democratic institutions and countering the Congress party’s approach to electoral and constitutional matters. This announcement comes amid escalating political tensions between the BJP and Congress over electoral processes, institutional independence, and immigration-related issues within the state.
