Kiren Rijiju, India’s Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Minority Affairs, recently traveled to Doha to express India’s condolences on the death of Qatar’s Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. This visit highlights the deep-rooted and enduring ties between the two nations.
During his time in Doha, Rijiju met with Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, delivering condolences on behalf of the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Rijiju praised the late Father Amir, describing him as a visionary leader instrumental in Qatar’s development and in bolstering the strategic partnership between India and Qatar. He noted that the Indian community in Qatar deeply mourns the loss and holds Sheikh Hamad’s contributions in high regard.
Prime Minister Modi had earlier paid tribute to the Father Amir, recognizing him as a true friend of India and acknowledging his significant role in enhancing bilateral relations. The Indian government honored Sheikh Hamad’s memory by observing a day of national mourning on July 13, 2026. On this day, the national flag was flown at half-mast on government buildings, and official entertainment activities were suspended as a mark of respect.
The diplomatic visit by Rijiju not only served to convey condolences but also underscored the strong diplomatic relationship between India and Qatar. Both countries continue to place great importance on their longstanding partnership, which has been strengthened through the contributions and leadership of figures like Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
