Reports suggesting that India has turned down a fast-track trade agreement with the United States have been labeled as “false” and “misleading” by Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor. Both officials have assured that recent conversations between the two nations have been fruitful, emphasizing their commitment to reaching a balanced and mutually advantageous trade deal.
Piyush Goyal highlighted productive discussions with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, reinforcing the positive trajectory of the negotiations. Similarly, US Ambassador Sergio Gor characterized the talks as constructive, underscoring the active engagement from both parties in working towards an agreement.
Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal added that the negotiation process is on track, with a framework for the agreement already in place. He noted that both countries are simply waiting for the opportune moment to finalize and sign the deal, indicating that the groundwork has been laid for a future accord.
Optimism surrounding the potential for an interim trade agreement remains high among US officials. They have pointed to the ongoing cooperation between New Delhi and Washington as a promising sign that a resolution could be reached in the near future.
