The West Bengal government has taken a significant step to preserve its cultural heritage by providing financial aid of ₹5 lakh each to 60 Rath Yatra committees across the state. This funding is dedicated to the restoration and maintenance of the historic chariots used in the Rath Yatra celebrations, marking the first instance of direct state support for these events. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari emphasized the urgent need for renovation, noting that many of these traditional wooden chariots are centuries old and in dire need of repair.
In addition to the financial support for the Rath Yatra, the state has planned a spectacular display for the 30-km Shravan Yatra at Tarakeshwar in Hooghly district. Devotees participating in the event will witness helicopters showering flower petals on them, adding a special touch to the pilgrimage. The government is also focusing on the well-being of the pilgrims by setting up Seva Kendras at 75 fair locations, ensuring that medical aid, police assistance, drinking water, and other essential services are readily available.
The initiative reflects the state’s broader commitment to supporting religious and cultural events, with plans to expand financial assistance to more Rath Yatra committees in the future. This strategic move aims to preserve the cultural significance of these events while enhancing the overall experience for participants and spectators alike.
Beyond the immediate support for the Rath Yatra, West Bengal is making long-term investments to enhance its religious tourism infrastructure. A substantial ₹1,000 crore is being allocated over the next three years to develop the Bengal Shaktipeeth Circuit. This ambitious project is designed to promote pilgrimage, restore historic temples, and boost religious tourism across the state, reinforcing West Bengal’s position as a key destination for spiritual and cultural exploration.
