India and Denmark are set to enhance their strategic partnership with a focus on renewable energy, sustainable shipping, technological innovation, and bilateral trade. This development follows discussions held during Denmark’s Business Minister Martin Lidegaard’s visit to Mumbai and New Delhi from November 2 to 3. Lidegaard engaged with Indian government representatives and business leaders to explore new avenues for economic cooperation, emphasizing Denmark’s commitment to supporting India’s green transition.
The countries are preparing to advance their Green Strategic Partnership, initially established in 2020. A new joint action plan is being crafted to bolster cooperation in areas of shared economic and environmental interest. In Mumbai, Lidegaard visited APM Terminals, part of the Danish shipping group Maersk, and conversed with Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma about investment and business opportunities.
In New Delhi, talks with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal centered on expanding bilateral trade and improving business opportunities, particularly in light of the proposed India-European Union free trade agreement. Presently, over 200 Danish companies operate in India, employing more than 100,000 individuals across various sectors.
The visit also underscored potential collaborations in sustainable maritime development. Discussions with Union Ports and Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal focused on environmentally friendly shipping, modern port infrastructure, and the establishment of green maritime corridors.
Renewable energy cooperation emerged as another priority. Meetings with Renewable Energy Minister Pralhad Joshi explored strategies to improve energy efficiency, enhance clean energy infrastructure, and support India’s transition towards a more sustainable power system. Denmark’s involvement in solar energy development and contribution to the International Solar Alliance further supports this collaborative effort.
The strengthened partnership between India and Denmark is anticipated to create new opportunities for investment, technological exchange, and sustainable development, while deepening economic ties between the two nations.
