Union Home Minister Amit Shah has announced that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is prepared to convene a special session of Parliament to address the Opposition’s allegations of vote theft. Shah made these remarks during a BJP state working committee meeting in Lucknow, challenging Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav to present their claims against the Election Commission in Parliament.
Shah criticized the accusations as baseless and accused the Opposition of favoring street protests over parliamentary debates. His comments come as Opposition parties plan demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, including a symbolic public impeachment event and a major protest at Delhi’s Ramlila Ground. These actions are in response to what the Opposition describes as threats to democratic institutions.
The INDIA bloc had initially planned to hold the symbolic impeachment event at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence but postponed it due to unseasonal rainfall. Opposition parties have expressed concerns regarding the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, suggesting the process could unfairly impact voters and benefit the ruling BJP.
In his address, Shah also criticized the electoral performance of the Congress and Samajwadi Party, arguing that their leaders have resorted to blaming the Election Commission instead of accepting electoral defeats. He defended the BJP’s political record and highlighted that the Opposition raises vote theft allegations following election losses.
