Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced the upcoming launch of the “Namo Yamuna” ferry service, set to begin operations just days before the Hindu festival Chhath Puja, celebrated from November 13 to 16. The service aims to offer both transportation and scenic enjoyment along the Yamuna River.
The ferry will operate a one-hour route between Sonia Vihar and Jagatpur, allowing passengers to view ghats and the natural riverbanks over a five-kilometer stretch. This initiative not only marks a new mode of transport but also aims to develop the area around Sur Ghat as a family-friendly destination for both leisure and religious activities, especially during Chhath celebrations.
Initially slated to launch earlier this year, the ferry service was delayed due to incomplete project work. The vessel, known as Island Boats 40 (IB 40), is built by Mumbai-based Inspiration Marine Pvt Ltd and features a catamaran-style hull for stability in shallow waters. Facilities at the jetties will include boarding areas, ticket counters, and waiting areas, with tickets priced at approximately ₹500 per person.
Chief Minister Gupta personally inspected the ferry at Sonia Vihar Sports Club and visited the Sur Ghat development site, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing the riverfront as a cultural and recreational hub.
