India and Poland have pledged to enhance cooperation in key strategic areas, including defence, nuclear energy, and advanced technologies. This development follows a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, where they also discussed plans to significantly boost bilateral trade.
During the talks, both leaders underscored the potential for joint development and production in sectors such as defence equipment and space technology. They also explored collaborations in critical minerals, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and fintech, with Modi extending an invitation to Polish firms for partnerships in co-development and co-production efforts.
The nations are aiming to double their bilateral trade from its current figure of approximately $6.3 billion by the year 2030. To facilitate this growth, a delegation comprising nearly 100 Polish companies is currently investigating business opportunities in sectors like defence, agriculture technology, pharmaceuticals, and infrastructure in India.
On the defence front, India and Poland are working towards an agreement concerning the protection and exchange of classified information to enhance defence-industrial collaboration. Plans to establish a defence industry dialogue and a counterterrorism dialogue were also agreed upon. The countries are particularly interested in joint manufacturing of military equipment, drones, and satellite technologies, which aligns with the broader strategic partnership between India and the European Union.
In addition to economic and strategic discussions, regional and international issues such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict were addressed. Modi reiterated India’s stance on supporting diplomatic efforts for peace, while Polish officials appreciated India’s calls for a negotiated resolution to the conflict.
The meeting also highlighted historical and people-to-people connections, recalling Poland’s assistance to Indian students evacuated from Ukraine in 2022 and India’s support for Polish refugees during World War II. This meeting marks a significant step in solidifying India-Poland relations, with both countries focused on expanding trade, enhancing strategic cooperation, and building resilient supply chains.
