China has expressed approval of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent comments on India’s independent foreign policy. These remarks followed his discussion with Chinese President Xi Jinping during the BRICS Summit held in New Delhi. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, emphasized that Beijing appreciates Modi’s assertion that India’s relationship with China will not be swayed by third-party countries. This sentiment underscores a mutual understanding that both nations should continue to be partners and support each other’s developmental goals.
During the meeting, President Xi highlighted that despite the distinct national circumstances of China and India, the focus should remain on cooperation. He stressed the importance of managing differences through mutual respect and understanding. Modi, on his part, reiterated that maintaining peace and stability along the shared border is crucial for enhancing bilateral relations. He emphasized adherence to existing agreements and understandings concerning border issues as a critical element of this process.
Both leaders underscored their commitment to seeking a fair and mutually acceptable resolution to the boundary dispute. They agreed that while differences exist, these should not escalate into disputes. This dialogue comes in the wake of longstanding tensions along the Line of Actual Control, a sensitive area that has seen various conflicts over the years.
The meeting between the two leaders is seen as a continuation of efforts to ease these tensions, particularly following an agreement reached in October 2024. This agreement facilitated the disengagement of troops from several friction points in the Ladakh sector, significantly reducing the prolonged military standoff.
