Keir Starmer, the outgoing Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, has marked a significant achievement in his diplomatic career by finalizing a long-anticipated Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India just before resigning. During a meeting at the G7 Summit 2026 with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the leaders settled on July 15 as the date to implement the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA). This agreement is set to bolster the already substantial trade relationship between the two countries, which currently stands at approximately £48 billion annually.
Starmer, who has been a staunch advocate of strengthening UK-India relations, prioritized the trade deal during his tenure. He emphasized that the agreement presents a tremendous opportunity for economic growth, citing India’s growing influence in the global economy and the advantages of more accessible and cost-effective trade between the two nations. Since ascending to the leadership of the Labour Party after its 2019 electoral defeat, Starmer has been instrumental in mending ties with the British Indian community and fostering a robust partnership with India.
Under Starmer’s leadership, Labour committed itself to enhancing cooperation with India in various domains, including trade, security, education, technology, and climate change initiatives. Before embarking on his political journey, Starmer enjoyed a prominent legal career, serving as the Director of Public Prosecutions. He assumed the role of Prime Minister following Labour’s overwhelming victory in the 2024 general elections. However, despite early achievements in stabilizing the economy and pushing forward domestic reforms, Starmer’s position was gradually undermined by a series of policy challenges and political hurdles.
In his emotional resignation speech, Starmer acknowledged the loss of confidence from his parliamentary party members, who no longer viewed him as the suitable leader to guide Labour into the forthcoming general elections. Accepting their decision with respect and gratitude, Starmer’s departure marks the conclusion of a pivotal era in British politics.
