Demis Hassabis Resigns Amid Significant Restructuring of Google DeepMind AI Team

In a significant shake-up at Google DeepMind, Sir Demis Hassabis is stepping down from his role as chief executive amidst a major leadership overhaul. Hassabis, a co-founder of DeepMind since its inception in 2010, will transition to the chair of the organization and take on a new position as chief scientist at Alphabet, Google’s parent company. This move allows Hassabis to step away from daily management tasks, dedicating more time to advancing long-term AI research and the pursuit of artificial general intelligence.

With Hassabis shifting roles, Koray Kavukcuoglu, the current chief technology officer of DeepMind, will assume leadership as senior vice-president. Hassabis has expressed that this transition will enable him to concentrate on the comprehensive development of advanced AI, ensuring its benefits for humanity. Alongside his new duties, he will continue to serve as chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, a drug-discovery enterprise that originated from DeepMind.

These leadership changes coincide with notable departures of senior Google AI engineers. Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat have announced their exit from the company, setting off to establish a new startup, Discovery Loop, which aims to focus on machine learning, science, and engineering research.

The reshuffle occurs as the competition in the AI sector grows increasingly fierce, with Google facing strong rivals like OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have achieved significant progress in AI models and coding technologies. These developments highlight a pivotal shift for Google’s AI division, as the company aims to bolster its position in the fast-evolving race toward advanced artificial intelligence.
