India is advancing its plans to acquire five more S-400 Triumf air defense systems from Russia, with Moscow having submitted a cost proposal to initiate negotiations with New Delhi. The decision will be finalized by the Cabinet Committee on Security once the price is settled and the Finance Ministry gives its approval. The initial contract signed in 2018 for five such systems, costing $5.43 billion, is anticipated to be completed with the delivery of the last system by November 2026.
The additional S-400 systems are expected to significantly bolster India’s air defense capabilities, particularly along its eastern sector facing China. The system’s effectiveness was demonstrated during India’s air defense operations in Operation Sindoor in May 2025, reinforcing the argument for expanding the S-400 fleet. This development underscores India’s strategic move to enhance its defense mechanisms amid regional security challenges.
While the focus remains on the S-400 systems, India has yet to make a decision regarding the purchase of Russia’s Su-57 fifth-generation fighter aircraft. The Indian Air Force has shown interest in the Russian offer, especially given China’s deployment of J-20 stealth fighters in Tibet, which poses a strategic challenge to India’s air defense preparedness.
The discussions surrounding the S-400 acquisition are expected to be a key topic in broader India-Russia defense dialogues. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s scheduled visit to India for the BRICS summit in September is anticipated to further these discussions, potentially solidifying defense ties between the two nations.
