WhatsApp Introduces Usernames for Phone Number-Free Chatting Feature

WhatsApp is set to revolutionize user privacy with the introduction of a new feature that allows connections via usernames instead of phone numbers. This significant update is being gradually introduced and will enable users to initiate conversations without revealing their mobile numbers, marking a major change in the way communication happens on the platform.

The rollout is occurring in phases, with users given the chance to reserve unique usernames before a full global launch anticipated later this year. This system works by allowing users to create distinct handles within the app. When someone wishes to message a user, they will only need the username—keeping phone numbers private. If a desired username is already taken, WhatsApp will offer alternative suggestions through an in-app generator.

A noteworthy aspect of this feature is its focus on privacy, as there will be no public directory of usernames. This design ensures users are only contactable by those who already know their exact username, thereby preventing random searches. Users eager to reserve their username can do so by updating the app and navigating to Settings, then Account, and finally Username. As the app boasts billions of users, securing popular usernames early is advisable.

To enhance security further, WhatsApp will offer an optional “username key,” providing an additional layer of protection. This key can be shared separately, allowing users to control who can initiate contact with them. The feature is beneficial not only for personal users but also for creators, businesses, and public accounts. It offers an opportunity for users to align their WhatsApp identity with existing handles on platforms like Instagram and Facebook.

Importantly, adopting a username is not mandatory; users who prefer the traditional method of using phone numbers can continue to do so. Notifications will appear within the app as the feature becomes accessible across different regions.
