London Marathon Announces Historic Expansion to Two-Day Event in 2027

The London Marathon is set to break new ground in 2027 by transforming into a two-day event, accommodating an unprecedented 100,000 runners over the weekend of April 24-25. This temporary shift from the traditional one-day format aims to address the overwhelming demand witnessed as over 1.3 million people entered the public ballot. Despite the expansion, the odds of obtaining a spot will remain under 10% due to the high level of interest.

The event’s organizers anticipate that this enlarged marathon will generate more than £150 million for charitable causes, setting a record as the most significant fundraising event in UK sporting history. Additionally, the marathon is expected to deliver approximately £400 million in social and economic benefits, highlighting its impact beyond the race itself.

The weekend’s race schedule is meticulously planned, with the first day dedicated to the elite women’s, elite female para-athletes, championship, and “Good for Age” women’s races, alongside a mass participation event of nearly 50,000 runners. On the second day, the spotlight will shift to the elite men’s race, accompanied by another large-scale mass participation event, allowing a diverse range of participants to experience the iconic course.

Runners will be allowed to compete on only one of the two days, ensuring that the spirit of the marathon remains intact while accommodating the increased number of participants. Results from the ballot are slated for announcement in early July, giving hopeful entrants ample time to prepare for the monumental event.

This two-day format is confirmed as a singular celebration, with the London Marathon expected to revert to its one-day tradition in subsequent years. The 2027 event promises not only to celebrate running but also to enhance the marathon’s legacy as a catalyst for charitable giving and community engagement.
