India clinched the Asian Games men’s cricket gold medal with a thrilling 19-run victory over Pakistan in the final held at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan. Batting first, India set a formidable target of 212 runs, thanks to a rapid start by Abhishek Sharma and a decisive late innings by Tilak Varma.
Abhishek Sharma was instrumental in India’s explosive start, scoring a brisk half-century that helped the team reach 81/2 during the Powerplay, marking their highest Powerplay score against Pakistan in T20 internationals. Although Pakistan’s bowlers, including Arafat Minhas, Ahmed Daniyal, and Abrar Ahmed, managed to stifle India’s scoring rate in the middle overs, Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 51 off 22 balls in the later stages was crucial. His partnership of 62 runs with Shivam Dube, who scored 27, propelled India past the 200-run mark.
Pakistan’s response was spirited, led by Hasan Nawaz who scored an unbeaten 96 from 51 balls. Nawaz formed a significant partnership with Saim Ayub, adding 87 runs and putting the Indian bowlers under pressure. However, India regained control with Washington Sundar’s excellent 18th over and Jasprit Bumrah’s effective penultimate over, tightening the screws on Pakistan’s chase.
Needing 33 runs from the final over, Pakistan fell short as Shivam Dube successfully defended the target, ensuring a gold medal for India and extending their dominance over Pakistan in T20 internationals. The victory reaffirms India’s prowess in the sport and their successful defense of the Asian Games title.
