India has aligned with the European Union, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Barbados, and Kenya to launch the “Partners for Multilateralism” (P4M) platform, aiming to bolster multilateral cooperation. This initiative was unveiled at the United Nations General Assembly in New York and seeks to address current global challenges through collaborative efforts.
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the urgency for stronger multilateral cooperation amid increasing geopolitical tensions and conflicts. He advocated for more inclusive discussions and greater transparency in decision-making within international institutions, highlighting the need for reform in the global order.
The P4M platform identifies several areas requiring enhanced international cooperation, such as international security, climate change, emerging technologies, development finance, and pandemic preparedness. Counterterrorism and resilient supply chains were also noted as critical areas for joint action.
The declaration from the P4M members calls for a reformed multilateral system that is more effective, representative, and inclusive. The countries involved support initiatives related to sustainable development, fair trade, global finance, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and global health.
To facilitate these goals, the participating nations have agreed to create a coordination mechanism and pinpoint priority areas for collaborative efforts. The platform remains open to other countries that wish to engage in strengthening multilateral cooperation, signaling a broad and inclusive approach to global governance reform.
