DTC Bus Strike Drives Delhi Metro to Record 82.4 Lakh Footfall

On September 17, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) reported a historic milestone with 8,244,903 passenger boardings in a single day. This record-breaking footfall occurred amidst a strike by private agency drivers associated with the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), which entered its fourth day, causing significant disruptions to bus services across the city.

The absence of thousands of buses from the roads pushed commuters to seek alternative modes of transport, significantly increasing the demand for Delhi Metro services. In response, the DMRC implemented measures to accommodate the surge in passengers, including the addition of 20 train trips and the deployment of eight extra trains during peak hours.

Efforts to manage the increased passenger flow also saw enhanced coordination between the DMRC and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which worked together to ensure smooth movement and maintain security within the metro stations. The surge in ridership underscores the critical role of the Delhi Metro as a reliable public transport option, particularly during times of public transportation disruptions.

This unprecedented level of metro usage highlights the reliance of Delhi-NCR commuters on the metro network, especially when other forms of public transportation face operational challenges. As the strike by DTC-associated drivers continues, the DMRC’s adjustments reflect its capacity to adapt and maintain service levels under pressure.
