The European Union has underscored the importance of India as a pivotal strategic partner, emphasizing enhanced collaboration across trade, technology, security, and connectivity. Both entities are currently working towards finalizing a groundbreaking Free Trade Agreement (FTA) expected to be signed by the year’s end.
At the commencement of Ireland’s presidency of the Council of the European Union, Irish Ambassador Kevin Kelly highlighted that the partnership between the EU and India transcends mere trade. It encompasses areas such as technology, research, climate initiatives, maritime security, and the establishment of resilient supply chains. The two sides are committed to strengthening ties to tackle shared global challenges and to foster sustainable economic development.
The much-anticipated India-EU Free Trade Agreement, which has completed its negotiation phase, is slated for formal signing in December, with implementation potentially starting early next year. The partnership has also broadened to include critical sectors like defense, security, and emerging technologies, in response to the evolving global economic and geopolitical landscape.
EU Ambassador Herve Delphin noted that Europe and India are navigating a changing global environment by pursuing greater strategic independence while maintaining robust partnerships. He emphasized the necessity of safeguarding freedom of navigation and securing global trade routes, advocating for intensified cooperation between India and the EU on matters of maritime security and regional stability.
