A deadly car blast in Delhi that killed eight people and injured 19 is being investigated from “all angles,” Home Minister Amit Shah said. The explosion, which happened near the historic Red Fort on Monday night, is being treated with utmost seriousness. The registered owner of the car has reportedly been detained for questioning.
The blast occurred at a red light outside the Red Fort metro station. Police Commissioner Satish Golcha confirmed a car had stopped at the light when it detonated, sparking a fire that “blackened and burned” over a dozen other vehicles. The 19 injured were rushed to a government hospital.
Home Minister Shah, who visited the scene, cautioned against early speculation. “It is difficult to say what caused the incident until the samples recovered from the blast site are analysed,” he stated. He assured a determined investigation, saying, “We do not consider any angle closed.”
The scene was one of total devastation. Witnesses described a “very strong explosion” and “chaos.” One resident, Om Prakash Gupta, recounted seeing “body parts all over” the road. Another witness saw a body “torn into pieces.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences on X and confirmed he is monitoring the situation. A high alert has been issued for Mumbai, the state of Uttar Pradesh, and major train stations as a precautionary measure.
