SGS Launches Guide for BIS Compliance to Aid Indian Market Entry

A new guide has been released to assist manufacturers and importers in understanding and complying with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) regulations, which are crucial for entering the Indian market. This guide, designed to address India’s changing regulatory landscape, highlights the pathways to certification for various product categories, allowing for a smoother and faster entry process.

With the growing scope of Quality Control Orders (QCOs) and increased regulatory scrutiny, the guide provides detailed insights into the certification processes. For products made in India, the ISI Mark under Scheme I is typically necessary, involving testing at BIS-approved labs and factory inspections. Products under the Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) follow Scheme II, while foreign manufacturers must adhere to the Foreign Manufacturer Certification Scheme (FMCS), which mandates audits of overseas factories and testing in BIS-recognized labs located in India.

The guide emphasizes the importance of selecting the correct certification framework, identifying the relevant Indian Standards (IS), and adequately preparing for audits, testing, labeling, and ongoing compliance needs. Early planning is advised to minimize certification delays, avoid expensive re-testing, and facilitate quicker product launches.

Additionally, comprehensive BIS application management services are offered, covering certification planning, audit preparation, coordination of testing, renewals, surveillance support, and assistance with new product variants. With a network of laboratories across key industrial hubs in India, these services aim to streamline testing procedures and expedite certification timelines.

As Quality Control Orders extend into sectors like footwear, furniture, and medical devices, businesses are urged to evaluate BIS requirements early in their product development and importation processes. This proactive approach is essential for ensuring seamless market entry and regulatory compliance.
