Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is asserting Israel’s right to veto any nation from a Gaza peacekeeping force, citing the “lingering challenge” of Hamas’s refusal to disarm. Days after a Trump-brokered truce, Netanyahu is moving to control the post-conflict landscape.
“Israel will determine which forces are unacceptable to us,” he said, claiming the US supports this. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed this, stating the force must be “comfortable” for Israel and that Hamas must be excluded.
Netanyahu has already used this to signal opposition to Turkey, a nation whose leader was highly critical of Israel.
The truce is facing severe tests. An Israeli strike on the Nuseirat camp, the second in a week, was condemned by Hamas as a “clear violation” and an attempt to undermine the peace.
Furthermore, the slow return of Israeli hostage remains has prompted a public warning from Donald Trump. Hamas has returned 18 remains, blaming recovery difficulties.
