A dental expert is highlighting a “vicious cycle” that links your mouth directly to your diabetes, and the solution is a simple 3-month rule. If your blood sugar is hard to manage, your oral hygiene could be a major factor.
The cycle is “bi-directional.” High blood sugar weakens your immune system, making your gums vulnerable to infection. As these infections take hold, they release toxins that disrupt insulin’s ability to work, which in turn raises your blood sugar.
This inflammation is the core problem. It starts with plaque from oral bacteria. An old, frayed toothbrush is ineffective at removing this plaque, allowing the inflammation to become chronic.
This inflammation doesn’t just stay in the mouth. It enters the bloodstream, where it can “ignite low-grade inflammation across the body.” It also contributes to atherosclerosis (hardened arteries), a major risk for heart disease.
To break this cycle, you must maintain excellent oral hygiene. That starts with replacing your toothbrush every three months. This ensures your “first line of defense” is strong enough to stop the inflammation before it starts.
