Japan Invests in India, Strengthening Tech Partnership and Expanding Trade Relations

Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently wrapped up a four-day visit to Japan, where he underscored the keen interest of Japanese businesses in bolstering their investment, manufacturing, and technology partnerships with India. Accompanied by a business delegation consisting of nearly 200 representatives, Goyal engaged in discussions with Japanese firms spanning various sectors, including robotics, semiconductors, electronics, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing.

Significant potential investment opportunities emerged from these business discussions. Notably, a Japanese robotics company identified an Indian partner, setting the stage for potential investments and plans to manufacture robots in India. This development aligns with the overarching aim of the visit, which was to amplify the presence of Japanese companies in India. Currently, around 1,500 Japanese companies operate within the country, and India is keen on expanding Japanese investments in burgeoning industries.

During the visit, both nations also initiated talks to review the India-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. These discussions aim to address regulatory challenges while exploring avenues for enhanced business-to-business cooperation. The focus on regulatory issues reflects a mutual interest in facilitating smoother trade and investment flows between the two countries.

India and Japan are working towards strengthening their trade and investment relations, with a bilateral trade target of $27.47 billion set for the fiscal year 2025-26. Looking further ahead, they aspire to elevate this figure to $50 billion by 2030. The visit marks a significant step in fortifying economic ties, showcasing the shared commitment of both countries to deepen their economic collaboration in the years to come.
