Google has emerged victorious in a high-stakes “bake-off,” with its 1.2 trillion parameter Gemini model beating OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. The prize: a $1 billion-a-year contract to become the “behind-the-scenes” engine for Apple’s new Siri.
This deal is a “temporary fix” for Apple, which is scrambling to make Siri competitive under its “Glenwood” project. The massive 1.2T model is a monumental upgrade from Apple’s current 150B models and will be used for complex “summariser” and “planner” functions.
The new “Linwood” Siri, launching in the spring, will be a hybrid. Apple’s in-house tech will handle simple tasks, while Google’s AI will tackle the heavy lifting, allowing the assistant to execute multi-step commands.
This is a significant win for Google’s “AI supplier” strategy, proving its technology is a must-have even for its chief rival. Apple, meanwhile, is pushing its teams to build a 1T+ model replacement, but it’s a difficult race.
The partnership hinges on Apple’s non-negotiable privacy terms. The Gemini model will be hosted on Apple’s “walled-off” Private Cloud Compute servers, ensuring Google gets its $1B fee but no access to user data.
